Sharks in the Dominican Republic🦈🇩🇴 . Feared by many and loved by a few, sharks hold a very special place in the hearts and minds of people that live by the ocean. Sadly, here in the DR, contrary to what your grandmother or that old fisherman might think, sharks have virtually dissapeared from our reefs. . By mid 20th century, sharks in the caribbean could be "expected anywhere at anytime" (Baughman & Springer, 1950). However, this abundance led to a massive fishing pressure, peaking as recently as 1990 with more than 9 million metric tons of shark meat harvested across the islands (Bonfil, 1997). . Last year I was part of the first country-wide shark survey in the DR, with @reefcheckdr acting as the local partner of the @globalfinprint initiative. After surveying 203km of shoreline across 7 months, and collecting 608 hours of baited remote underwater video on the reefs we managed to see 4 sharks. This means that, in only 20 years sharks have gone from being everywhere to almost nowhere. . However, there is hope. Last year, after years of lobbying, Resolution No.023/17 was passed, banning the fishing of sharks and rays in dominican waters. How strong the enforcement of this law will be is still up for debate, and there is a lot of work that can and needs to be done for our sharks, but it is a promising start. . Recently, divers around the island are reporting an increase in sightings of nurse sharks in popular dive sites. Nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum) are a precursor species, dissapearing last and reappearing first than other shark species when habitat degradation or restoration occurs (Ward-Paige et al, 2010). Could they be the first signs of a future of healthier reefs? . Coral reefs provide a home to 25% of all marine life, yet they only take up only 1% of the ocean floor. ___ Unfortunately, despite the important role they play in marine ecosystems, healthy coral reef populations are declining at a rapid rate. This is due to a variety of factors, including land-based pollution. ___ As a result, there’s no better time than Coral Reef Awareness Week to start learning the causes behind the threats to coral reefs and what you can do to help. ___ 📸: NOAA ___ · · · · · #IYOR108 #themoreyounoaa #coralreefawarenessweek #coralreefawareness #infographic #reefrescue #saveouroceans #tiptuesday #coralreeds #reefs #coral #summer #conservation #marine #ocean #oceans #savethesea #makeadifference #igdaily #education #instaworld #IYOR #science #nonprofit #research #habitat #summertips #help #coralreefenthusiast
